The Path of Scripture

Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. -Psalm 119:105

I walk. Almost every day without fail, regardless of the weather, I head out of the house for a walk. I vary my walk occasionally, but I take the same route most days. It is not a long route but has a good hill, and I keep a brisk pace. I listen to books and enjoy my surroundings. At my first turn, there is a dog. He is fenced, and I know he is there, but I often jump when the first bark rings out. As I head down the first hill, I pass the mayor’s house. He is frequently out, and sometimes it is just a wave; other times, it is a long talk about the state of the city, books, or our shared faith in Jesus Christ. As I walk, I notice which families have recently bought new cars. I track what plants or trees are losing leaves in the fall, standing stark in the winter, and budding in the spring. In the summer, I enjoy the hum of lawnmowers and the peal of children playing as the breeze delicately moves the leaves in a rhythmic fashion. Two homes received new roofs this past summer and two more fresh coats of paint. Paint samples have adorned 8343 since last spring, and I eagerly await the chosen color. Just to the west, a house went on the market, was sold, and still sits empty. And around the corner, an elderly woman takes meticulous care of her yard, decorating for every season as her husband, who appears to be disabled, works puzzles in the window. Finally, along my path, I pass in front of the homes or former homes of five of my teachers from junior high and high school.

Some would ask if walking the same route gets boring. The answer is no. As I walk, there is always something new to see—so much more than I shared above. This is like the Word of God. I have heard people pronounce the Bible boring as they have heard it all, and there can be nothing new. God's Word is indeed unchanging, but we have finite minds, and even if we live for one hundred years, we will not glean all that we can from its pages. His truths are vast, and mysteries abound. This being so, each time I head out on a walk through Scripture’s pages, there is the familiar and treasures I have not noticed before. With the Holy Spirit as our guide, so much can be gathered from the truths of each word, sentence, paragraph, and chapter. “The Word of God is living and active…(Heb. 4:12)”

Do not neglect your time in God’s Word. Pray as you read that He will open your mind, heart, and soul to the riches on every page. I guarantee that you will be blessed.

Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. -Psalm 119:105

For the Word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart. -Hebrews 4:12

All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.  -2 Timothy 3:16-17
